Walking in Britain

Maps and Guides

Maps

The Ordnance Survey is the premier producer and supplier of maps for the UK with a worldwide reputation for clarity and accuracy.

The 1:25000 Explorer series are recommended for walking. Although the 1:50000 Landranger series will suffice for the more experienced walker, they do lack details such as field boundary markings. On the plus side, for a long distance walk you'll need to carry less Landranger verses Explorer maps.

Some other Map Providers

Harvey 1:25000 and 1:40000 maps which cover the more popular walking areas: Lake District, national trails.

The Chiltern Society.

Walking Guides

Many walking guides are marketed covering specific walking routes / trails: Coast to Coast, Two Moors Way etc. In addition to these guides providing descriptive text of the route, they also include maps (most often OS 1:25000 strip maps highlighting the route), plus useful additional information such as accommodation and history of the area. If you are intending to embark on a long distance path then a good guide book will prove invaluable.

Pathfinder guides: Crimson publishing now market over 100 Pathfinder guide books, each detailing 20 plus walks covering a particular walking area. The walks cover all abilities from short 3 mile walks to 10+ mile walks and include the relevant OS 1:25000 map, plus descriptive text for the walk and details of refreshment stops.
